The Voice in Drawer Nine
Begin with what survived
The room remembers.
Inspect an object. Its evidence goes into your notebook. The photographs are a good place to start.
The memorial has not begun.
You have time to get this right.
The agreed facts of the case
- All six records are established facts. A suspect’s personality, profession or identity is not evidence.
- Each suspect visited once, alone, in first, second or third place. Each kept one different case throughout the visit. No cases were exchanged.
- Exactly one visitor personally made the swap, acting alone. There was no remote access, concealed visitor or access between visits.
- No outside knowledge, hidden code, colour recognition or sound is needed.
Make a theory. Let the evidence challenge it.
Put the visits back in order.
Select a card, then a matching space. You can also drag a card with a mouse. Test your theory at any stage.
Partial theories welcome.
A possible arrangement is not yet proof.
The photographs establish when
Find the window for the swap.
A name needs a reason
Who made the physical swap?
The records can establish an action. They cannot tell you a motive or who wrote the replacement message.
What supports your accusation?
Choose the two independent parts of your case.
Case closed
Her voice is not
yours to replace.
You stop the playback. Edda’s family will not hear a replacement presented as her final words.
The photographs place the change inside the second visit. The other records put Nera-6 there, with the brass case. You have grounds to question the attendant about the physical swap—not to invent its motive.
Follow the complete chain of reasoning
- The entrance strip puts Nera-6 after someone else. The torn appointment rules out Silas as first. Iona must have been first.
- The brass-case visitor came immediately after Iona. Brass therefore belongs to the second visit.
- Nera-6 cannot carry glass, because that visitor came earlier. The material scan rules out leather. Nera-6 must carry brass, and must be second.
- The original was present after visit one. The replacement was present before visit three. With no access between visits, the second visitor made the swap.
- Silas is the remaining visitor, in third place. Glass goes to Iona and leather to Silas.
“What did she really say?” someone asks.
You cannot promise an answer yet.
But you can keep a lie from becoming her legacy.
The original recording has not been recovered. The evidence does not identify the author of the replacement or establish a motive. This is the complete deduction case.
